How to fly your first drone map

From flight plan to orthomosaic, step by step.

Your first map is easier than it looks. Here’s the workflow most small businesses use.

1. Pick software that supports your drone

Automated mapping apps fly the grid for you. DroneDeploy publishes its supported-drone list, which includes the Mini 4 Pro on Android with the RC-N2 controller.[4] Install the app and do a test flight in an open field first.

2. Decide your detail level

Choose a target ground sampling distance (GSD), such as 2 cm/px, and use our calculator to find the altitude. Stay under 400 ft above ground in the U.S.

3. Draw the area and set overlap

Outline the area and add a margin. About 75% front and 65–70% side overlap is a common starting point. Add more for trees or uniform surfaces like fields and roofs.

4. Check conditions

Overcast light reduces harsh shadows. Avoid strong wind. Check airspace authorization in the app before you fly.

5. Fly, then check coverage

Before you pack up, review a few photos for blur. Re-fly any gaps now rather than coming back later.

6. Process

Upload to your software to make an orthomosaic and, if needed, a 3D model. For measurements tied to real coordinates, add RTK or ground control points next time.[2]
