Mapping & photogrammetry

Mapping drones, from roof estimates to crop health

You don’t always need a survey-grade aircraft. Here’s what each tier of mapping drone delivers, which software supports it, and how to plan flights for the detail you need.

U.S. buyers: the FCC added foreign-made drones, including DJI, to its Covered List on Dec 22, 2025. New foreign models can’t get FCC authorization. Previously authorized models can still be sold and flown, but further limits are under consideration.[1]

Mapping drones fly a grid of overlapping photos that software stitches into an orthomosaic, a 3D model or a measurement-ready surface. Three things decide quality: the camera (sensor size, and whether it has a mechanical shutter), the positioning (standard GPS or RTK) and the software. For land-survey-grade work, see our sister site Best Survey Drones.

Mapping drone tiers

We haven’t lab-tested these. They are chosen from the makers’ published specs and what each one is built for, so you can match a model to your situation.

Best for crop health

DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral

DJI Agriculture

Sold through DJI Agriculture dealers.

A 951 g drone with a 20 MP RGB camera plus four 5 MP multispectral cameras and RTK. DJI rates it at up to 43 minutes of flight and up to 200 ha per flight.[3]

Why a mechanical shutter matters

Electronic “rolling” shutters read the sensor line by line, so a moving drone can distort the frame. That forces you to fly slowly, or accept small errors. Mechanical-shutter cameras like the Mavic 3 Enterprise’s capture the whole frame at once.[2] This matters most for measurement work. For roof photos and progress maps, a consumer drone flown slowly is often enough.[4]

Do you need RTK?

Without RTK, maps are internally consistent but can be shifted by a meter or more in real-world coordinates. That’s fine for counting, roof area or progress photos. If you need to overlay CAD designs, compute volumes for billing, or hand data to a surveyor, use RTK (the M3E’s optional module is rated at 1 cm + 1 ppm)[2] or ground control points.

Software: DroneDeploy, Pix4D and friends

Your processing software decides which drones you can fly with automated mission planning. DroneDeploy publishes a list of supported drones, including the Mini 4 Pro on Android with the RC-N2 controller.[4] Check support before buying, especially for newer models.

Plan for GSD, not altitude

Start from the detail you need. For example, 2 cm per pixel shows cracks and small objects, while 5 cm per pixel is fine for site overviews. Then work out the altitude. Our GSD calculator does it for any camera.

Questions buyers ask

Can I map with a cheap drone?

Yes, for visual maps and relative measurements. DroneDeploy supports the DJI Mini 4 Pro on Android with the RC-N2.[4] For accurate measurements, use RTK or ground control.

What overlap should I use?

Common starting points are about 75% front and 65–70% side overlap. Increase it for trees, crops and low-texture surfaces.

What is multispectral imaging for?

It captures light bands outside normal color photos, which are used for vegetation indices like NDVI to spot crop stress. The Mavic 3 Multispectral has four 5 MP multispectral cameras.[3]

Are DJI drones still legal in the U.S.?

Previously authorized models can still be sold and flown. New foreign models can’t get FCC authorization.[1]
